In 2024, LEADS Nepal organised a ginger processing and value-addition training in Naram village, Ward No. 6 of Baudikali Rural Municipality, Nawalpur. The training brought together 20 women carers, most of them members of the local Carers Group and the newly formed Women-Led Carers Cooperative. Over ten intensive days, participants learned hand-based techniques for cleaning, slicing, drying, grinding, and packaging ginger. They also gained new skills in product quality control, branding, and value-addition, enabling them to turn raw ginger into powder, juice, and pickles—products with far greater market value. Following the training, the women’s group collectively established a small-scale production unit supported by the cooperative.
LEADS facilitated basic equipment, cooperative registration, and market linkages with buyers in Pokhara and nearby towns. The training not only increased participants’ income prospects but also boosted their confidence and leadership. “Before, we sold raw ginger to middlemen for whatever price they gave. Now, we process and sell our own products,” shared one participant. The Naram women’s success illustrates how practical skills, cooperative support, and market connections can transform rural carers’ unpaid labour into dignified livelihoods, advancing LEADS Nepal’s mission of “Mental Health. Livelihoods. Dignity.”
