LAUNCHING OF COLLECTIVE POTATO FARMING INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT CARERS INCOME
Dec 6, 2024
LEADS Nepal launched a collective potato farming initiative in Myagdi, Baglung, and Nawalpur to support carers of individuals with mental illnesses. With support from the Vicente Ferrer Foundation (Spain), 2,000 kg of potato seeds were distributed to carers and marginalized groups, including poor, disadvantaged, and Dalit communities, to improve income through sustainable farming.
The initiative promotes collective farming, resource-sharing, and increased productivity across Beni, Baglung, and Baudikali municipalities.
Program Coordinator Nisha Mahat confirmed that all participants have planted the potatoes, and spray machines were provided to ensure healthy crops.
Additionally, LEADS Nepal supported local entrepreneurs by providing farming tools such as a pounding mill, grass-cutting machine, millet thresher, and mini tiller. The organization also provides ongoing support, including regular medication for 12 low-income individuals with mental health issues and financial aid to 15 carer entrepreneurs, in collaboration with UNDP and local municipalities.
